This investigation was made that the spinal cord regeneration experiment by the transplantation using follicle stellate cells. We have reported that leptin, discovered as a satiating factor, has a positive effect on the maturation and maintenance of gap junctions between follicular astrocytes in Zucker rats with dysfunctional leptin receptors. In this study, we investigated the effects of aging on the maintenance of gap junctions in the anterior pituitary of 2-year-old Zucker fatty (fa/fa) rats by examining gap junctions between follicular astrocytes in Zucker lean (+/-) and Wistar Imamichi rats. Although the detailed mechanism remains unclear, the results suggest that leptin signaling is effective in maintaining gap junctions between follicular astrocytes in 2-year-old rats, where age-related changes are expected. These results suggest that the maintenance of gap junctions is essential for the transplantation of follicular astrocytes.

The acid-sensing ion channel (ASIC) family is a major branch of the mechanosensory degenerin/epithelial Na+ channel superfamily. Here, we report that acid-sensing ion channels (ASICs) type 1a knockout (KO) female mice exhibit the impairment in maternal behavior. The ASIC 1a KO female mice also show the downregulation of the dopamine transporter (DAT). While the function of these interactions is not well understood, it might be possible that the interactions between coexisting plural channels and transporters play some crucial roles to maintain the synaptic action. In this paper, we propose that the ASIC 1a KO female mice express the impairment in maternal behavior from the downregulation of the DAT.

In order to clarify the origin and turnover of water molecules in CSF, dynamic PET study was performed using H215O. Normal volunteers (n=11) and patients with definite idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH, n=2) were included. Dynamic PET data were obtained for 8 minutes after intravenous bolus injection of H215O (500MBq) in saline. Voxels of interest (VOI) were set in the internal carotid artery (ICA), cortical gray matter (GM), white matter (WM) lateral ventricle (LV) based on MR T1 (3D) images. The time and relative radio activity (RAA) curves of each VOI were analyzed. The activities in the whole brain structures decreased gradually. On the contrary, the activity of LV increased gradually until the end of the measurement {27% of the whole brain parenchyma (GM+WM) activity at 8 minutes}. The RRA of LV in iNPH tended to be lower compared to the normal control. This study showed very fast movement of water molecules from artery to brain parenchyma and ventricular CSF.
